Hello and welcome to week 10 of the off-season.
As if we couldn’t handle anymore players moves, there’s still a few stragglers.
But first, let’s get into the con.
1st Disc Golf Con
First thing to ask yourself: What does focus on the fans mean?
The second: Maybe it’s worth it for you?
Infinite Discs is holding the first ever DG convention the weekend (Feb 15-19) before the 1st DGPT event of the year, Las Vegas Challenge. The event includes flex start C-Tiers, non-sanctioned rounds, pro clinics & panels, pro exhibition match, and a vending area (what Infinite does best).
It seems like every pro under the sun is attending. And it makes sense… Make a little extra dough and practice on the Vegas courses. But before you book a flight out to Vegas, you should know attendee passes are $140 AND if you want to participate in the flex-starts, it’ll cost an extra $20/ea.
If you’re able to go, then DG Con will be a great experience. But maybe the real focus is on the fans’ wallets.
Contracts Watch
🚨 NEW 🚨
Hopefully the last week of player announcements 🤞.
Chris Dickerson is earning his worth finally. He left Prodigy after 6 years and has partnered with Discraft for 4 years worth over a million $ (similar to McBeth’s 1st Discraft contract). With this new support, he’s looking forward to playing more tournaments. Can’t wait to see Dickerson shred the Vegas courses for the 1st time cause you know he will.
Hailey King is now the star American FPO player on Innova. This signing is perfect for both King and Innova. Contract length and $ haven’t been announced.
Gannon Buhr - The 2021 Rookie of the Year extends his contract with Prodigy another 2 years. He’s finishing up high school this year and has a very bright future ahead. World Champ 2025?
Casey White - Simon’s 2020 vlogmas partner has extended his contract with Discmania for another 2 years.
Catrina Allen - Nothing has come out of her camp on a new sponsorship yet. But Ian Anderson (contract whisperer & CCDG owner) speculated on r/discgolf that she’ll sign with Infinite Discs.
MOVES MADE
See last week’s edition for a summary of all the off-season moves OR check out Ultiworld’s list.
Shelly Sharpe Memorial
Preview
The Shelly Sharpe Memorial is the 1st PDGA Pro A-Tier of the year. Historically known as an opportunity to watch a few touring pros knock the rust off and to preview the Memorial Championship at Vista Del Camino Park. The Memorial had always been the the first elite series disc golf event of the season, but that tradition ended last year.
The Vista disc golf course features a large pond located in a very public park. That being the major reason why Vista Del Camino & Fountain Hills Park are considered not up to Pro Tour standards anymore.
Last Year Results
Adam Hammes beat out Drew Gibson by 5 strokes to win $1,330. He averaged 1057-rated golf with 41 other MPO players in the field.
Player to Watch
Notable pros playing include:
Adam Hammes
Cale Leiviska
Drew Gibson
Austin Turner
Anthony Barela
Aaron Gossage
Gibson is the player to watch this weekend. Fresh off his new deal with Infinite, he might be slinging his new line of discs (Finish Line Discs). Can’t wait to watch him smash a dead straight 500’ drive with a “mid-range”.
You’ll be able to watch a cut of the tournament on Terry Miller’s (The Disc Golf Guy) YouTube page.
New Plastic
Shiny Contracts = Signature Lines
Along with 6 bitcoins, Ricky Wysocki is getting his own line of Sockibomb discs. DD will create the brand new molds within their “Supreme Series” (equivalent to Latitude 64’s Royal Line). The series guarantees “buttery smooth” edges with zero flashing.
The 1st disc out of 8 will be an OS upshot putter (coming soon). He described it as very similar to the Westside Harp but with a few tweaks including a thumb track. He must have found something he liked in the Innova Pig. And if he can make that previously unpopular disc sell, then this new SockiHarp will rake it in.Prodigy will rebrand the new A Model OS as Kevin Jones’s signature Distortion disc. He describes it as an A3 with slightly less dump that he’ll lean on all season. Keeping with the theme, the OS driver to his signature line will be the Reverb. Jones is following Emac’s example by rebranding modded popular discs into his lineup.
Random Triples
Someone on r/discexchange is trying to trade up an Aviar to as high a value as they can go. It went from Aviar to Champion Manta to GG halo star wraith. Anyone willing to trade a 2015 sexton firebird?
Do you have a polar bear and it’s cubs frequent your home course? They do in Antarctica.
Thomas Gilbert: Not only is he Canadian, recently came out as gay, and loved by everyone on tour, he has a cannon for an arm with amazing form. You should check out this awesome graphic made by WolfKat Discs called Form-Shadow. Maybe you can learn a thing or two from TG.
