PREVIEW (4/28-5/1)
What was that? You like seeing pros struggle in the wind? Well, you’re gonna love this… Welcome to the Wind Capital of DG: Emporia, KS.
They call themselves the DG Capital of the World, but some would advocate for a rename. Either way, the KS winds make these somewhat open & OB-ridden courses a fun watch.
This 4-day event starts today. Players have 2 rounds of the Supreme 18 at Jones Park and finish the weekend at the Emporia Country Club.
The Country Club will showcase its modified classic holes: Long golf fairways with OB sides and beautiful, score-separating holes like the island hole 16.
As for Jones Park, you won’t recognize most holes. Eric McCabe took feedback from last year and created a new championship-level course different from Jones Gold.
Working with what he’s got, McCabe went all out. And it will play harder than last year.
Pros: Jones Gold was too easy
McCabe: You get an OB. You get an OB. And you get an OB.
LAST YEAR RECAP
MPO/ Players preyed on the easy Jones Gold course and shot staggering hot rounds of -15 and -14. It wasn’t until Saturday at the Country Club that we saw a race starting to form.
Paul McBeth, Eagle McMahon, and Calvin Heimburg crowded the top going into Championship Sunday. But with such a close race, it was shoot hot or go home empty-handed. And McBeth did so confidently to win by 6 strokes over Wysocki & McMahon.
FPO/ Hailey King convinced everyone in Emporia that she could turn it on when it mattered. Shooting hot in rounds 2 & 3, she held the lead with 1 stroke over Catrina Allen.
Watching Allen card bogey after bogey, King maintained her cool and played clean. She averaged a 988 rating to win by 6 strokes and rode that high into the rest of her 2021 season.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
MPO/ McBeth has a track record of winning the next tournament immediately following the World Championship. This has been true since 2014.
While Champs Cup wasn’t Worlds, it was still a Major. And he got as close as possible to winning Jonesboro without actually winning.
So if you do the math, McBeth will settle for nothing less than 1st place this weekend.

So sorry for giving you some false hope… But not all is lost. If you’re dedicated and want to embark on your own pro journey, then Kristin Tattar is a great example.
Recently interviewed by UDisc, she details her background and journey. After quitting competitive cross-country skiing, Tattar discovered DG at the age of 20.
Through dedication, training, and athleticism, she’s now one of the best women in the world and has a paycheck to back it up. Tattar shows no signs of slowing down, so why should you.

1️⃣ This week The Upshot interviewed a Clinical Psychologist for the USC Athletic Program, Dr. Mike McCall. He had insights on pros’ mental performances and gave two ways you could improve your mental game:
If you struggle with anxiety on the putting green but not at the practice basket, try distracting yourself. Instead of forcing your putt, do some mental math or a counting exercise. Hypnotize yourself.
Mental imagery. Before you throw, imagine watching yourself perform the shot you want to execute. It can also help to imagine a relaxing scene to control tense emotions.
It seems like Chubbs from Happy Gilmore was right: “Go to your happy place.”
