PDGA World Championships Pt2
PREVIEW (8/30-9/3)
Worlds starts today. Five rounds, two courses, and two world champs come Saturday.
Starting on Jones Supreme, players have a 2nd chance to redeem their DDO finishes. Back in April, the newly created course took no prisoners with peak Kansas winds.
Thankfully, the weather is looking better with hot sun, and low winds. So watch for bold throws and record-setting scores on Jones Supreme today & Thursday.
On Wednesday, Friday, & Saturday, the top pros will be at Emporia Country Club. Here you’ll recognize iconic holes like 1’s fairway bomb and 16’s island where we’ve seen a $25k ace and drop zone miracle.
Both courses - Jones in particular - will play completely differently with winds down. Holes that required pros’ most OS discs now have several options to score.
But the main strategy stays the same. Minimizing OB while landing in the correct zones will put players in a position to take home their 6th World title, 3rd, or even 1st.
2022 DDO RECAP
MPO/ While most pros played off their poor finishes as Worlds practice, Ricky Wysocki took home $8.6k and a DDO title. By the final round, Wysocki walked in a 6-stroke lead on his sponsor’s home turf.
Now, what was really interesting wasn’t Wysocki debuting his new Boonie hat, it was the 5-way tie for 3rd. Two strokes behind Lizotte was Väinö Mäkelä, Aaron Gossage, Logan Harpool, Jake Hebenheimer, & Brodie Smith.
For some, it was the 1st time they were on coverage and now they’re commonly known. But starting today, they have a chance to prove it wasn’t a fluke.
FPO/ In more dramatic fashion, Kristin Tattar battled Catrina Allen and won by 1 stroke. To get there, she shot a 1020-rated 2nd round and waited out a tornado watch.
This win followed her dominating 10-stroke finish at Jonesboro the week prior. But it was her last time in the US injury free.
PLAYER TO WATCH
Kristin Tattar. Who isn’t expecting her to win? Even your buddy who can’t recognize Gregg Barsby thinks Tattar’s got it in the bag.
UDisc’s brand new “Win Probability” feature has Tattar at a 58% win chance. This week will really test the accuracy of their new model.
As for MPO, there isn’t one player to watch this week. Watch anyone and everyone cause it’s open season this Worlds.
You’ll be able to watch live all weekend on DGN including a new, fixed camera stream. Or on next-day coverage from JomezPro, Gatekeeper Media, GK Pro, and Ace Run Pro.
DGPT Points Check-in
DGPT points and why they matter. All season, players earned points at every DGPT event. While some are worth more than others, it all culminates in the season final - DGPT Championship (10/13-16).
But on the way, there are two of the most coveted events on Tour - Green Mountain Championship & MVP Open. These are playoff events, meaning you must be invited to play.
Here’s the breakdown
Majors worth 1.5x points compared to Elite Series
Playoffs worth 1.25x points
Silver Series worth 0.25x points
What counts: Best 8 finishes at the 12 Tour stops, 3 Silver stops, 2 Major finishes, and both finishes from playoffs
Top 100 MPO & 50 FPO invited to GMC
Top 64 MPO & 32 FPO for MVP
Top 36 MPO & 20 FPO for Tour Championship
Current standings via UDisc
So Worlds won’t just change one person’s life, it’ll affect the rest of the season for many. Notables outside the bubble for GMC are Andrew Fish, Dustin Keegan, & Scott Stokely.
For MVP, the cut line is much more interesting. Tristan Tanner, Colten Montgomery, Stacie Rawnsley, & Erika Stinchcomb will want to make moves this week.
Fresh Plastic
Sponsored by Powergrip USA… A PRETTY GOOD disc golf shop.
👉 Powergrip’s Highlight: Prodigy PA-5 (3|4|-2|0.5)
With the long week ahead, manufacturers have slowed their releases. But luckily, we have a new one from Prodigy - The PA-5 is their most understable putter.
If the phrases “hyzer flip machine”, “easy turnover”, or “virtually no fade” make you weak at the knees, then this disc is for you. This truly US putter has been missing from the Prodigy lineup.
Releasing on Thursday (9/1), the PA-5 could be your new go-to for dead-straight drives and approaches. It should feel smaller in the hand, so an awkward grip will be the last of your concerns.
It’s available in 300 & 400 series plastic with the option of a 1st run stamp on both. Grab this and other discs with code PLYRSMTGAUG22 for 10% off your Powergrip order.
Random Dubs
1️⃣ The PDGA produced “The Holy Shot” documentary released last Wednesday (8/24) for DGN subscribers. It details our sport’s history leading up to the shot of a lifetime.
I highly recommend taking advantage of the break between FPO and MPO broadcasts to watch this 1hr 26min film. It feels like it was made by disc golfers for disc golfers, and I guarantee you’ll get goosebumps at least twice.
2️⃣ The days leading up to Worlds aren’t just for practice. This past weekend, pros showcased their talents in several Field Events: mixed doubles, long drive, mini disc, putting, & EDGE Skill Shot.
